As of 2 March 2020, Higher Education and Technician’s Educational Development (HEaTED) will be moving from its home at the STEM Learning Centre to be co-located with the National Technician Development Centre at the University of Sheffield.

New Course: Safe Lifting & Slinging Procedures / Pendant Crane
A new course from Lloyds British Training Services Ltd has been added to the HEaTED course directory. The course aims to teach the operators to safely sling loads and to use the Pendant Controlled Crane.

S-Lab Conference
HEaTED presented three briefing sessions at the S-Lab Conference in London on the 2nd and 3rd September. The Conference theme was ‘Good Practice and Great Networking to Inform and Inspire’ and the HEaTED session focused on supporting your technical staff on their diverse technical journeys. We will share the full conference report via the news page of the HEaTED website as soon as it becomes available.

Do Technicians Teach?

A new survey says they do, but that they receive little to no support from their educational institution.

A new survey* of higher education (HE) technicians in the UK has revealed that while 90 per cent feel that they contribute to the teaching process, less than 27 per cent felt they have received any support from their institution to prepare them for that role.

There are currently 20,680 technicians working in universities across England and an estimated 30,000 in the UK**.

These new findings highlight a stark gap between the expectations that institutions place on technicians and how technicians are actually professionally trained and developed. They will also leave many higher education students wondering if their technicians are being properly supported and trained for undertaking this role.

The results of the survey were compiled by HEaTED, a membership organisation dedicated to supporting the professional development of technical staff from all disciplines and specialisms in higher education.

In the Times Higher Education Student Experience Study 2014, 29 of the top 50 highest ranked universities were HEaTED members, demonstrating the link between professional support for technicians and the quality of the workplace. Nationally, only half of HE institutions are currently members of the organisation, missing out on the valuable training and support network HEaTED provides***.

“The HEaTED programme can make universities a better workplace for technical staff,” explains Dr Rachel Crossley, the Head of Programme at HEaTED which provides a national training programme and regional network where technicians can access best-in-class training.

“Since September 2012, HEaTED has provided training in Teaching and Learning Skills to over 200 technical staff through a dedicated programme developed to meet the precise training gap identified by this survey.

“Technical staff are a hugely valuable contributor to the student experience and their role in teaching should be both supported and recognised.

“As experts in our field, HEaTED’s vision is to support HE technicians in their professional development, improve the quality of the technical workforce, and ensure a long-term supply of high quality HE technical skills. However, at the moment, technicians are not getting the backing and support that they need from the institutions which employ them.

“As a workforce, technicians face an aging profile and a recognised skills shortage – about half of the technicians in chemistry, engineering and physics departments are due to retire within the next 15 years. Recently the UK Commission for Employment and Skills highlighted that by 2020 the UK will need an extra 450,000 individuals trained to technician level****.

“HEaTED is addressing this future shortfall by supporting a new generation of technicians with professional development opportunities and the provision of national and regional Networks. As more universities and HE institutions join HEaTED and invest in the future of their technicians and technical support staff, we can ensure that a potential career as a technician is that much more appealing.

“That change will not only benefit technicians but the UK’s quality of teaching in higher education as a whole.”

The HEaTED Scotland Network invites the region’s technical managers (TMans) to take part in a ground breaking seminar. This initiative has potentially extensive consequences for key aspects of technical resource governance. It will be an exceptional opportunity for you to play a lead in shaping the direction of a major UK change strategy, in so far as it affects on universities in Scotland. Wherever possible, this will be done in partnership with HR development colleagues.

The Browne Report and Financial Constraints:

Critical Issues for University Services and Staff’

The Aim: To provide Scotland’s technical resource managers with a opportunity to be engaged in informing, forewarning and forearming, themselves and their colleagues about the inferred consequences of the Browne Report (BR), in the context of the current economic constraints.

You will doubtless be aware of the immense impact of the BR in the context of student tuition fees for Universities throughout England. A landmark London HEaTE D network seminar identified potentially profound and long lasting consequences for people who work in universities. Will these resonate in Scotland? The enormous underlying fiscal constraints are certainly present on both sides of the border. So how will these influence:-

  • the quality, scope and substance of what is currently delivered for students, by universities?
  • professional roles, responsibilities and relationships among university staff and associates?
  • their personal and team training and development ?
  • job security and career prospects?

All of these are significant with respect to the professional responsibilities of Tmans, and the people with whom they have a role as team leader.

The meeting will explore these issues, drawing on the considerable expertise of its participants. Thus we intend to provide compelling evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of their (your) involvement in contributing to a constructive outcome of major strategic change during the critical formative process. In so doing you will gain a valuable insight, by being part of a critical examination of what is likely to be the most far reaching challenge to universities and their staff for decades. Nb A framework for discussion will be made available to all participants before the seminar.

The event will lead into consideration of the future of Scotland’s regional network with respect to:

  • Whether or not to launch a network
  • The purpose of the network / forum
  • How it would be managed and funded
  • Setting up a regional training programme for Scotland
  • Involving the technical staff in its delivery
  • Managing relationships and influencing upwards
  • What do we want from a CPD scheme and for technicians’.raining:
  • Issues around technicians involved in teaching and learning
  • Professional recognition.
  • Communication and collaboration opportunities.
  • Training: Ensuring relevance and feasibility?

Improving Performance Through Wellbeing

Improving performance through wellbeing and engagement is a two year national project funded by HEFCE in partnership with the Scottish Funding Council to support institutions to enhance their performance through their people

The project is led by the Universities of Leeds,Bristol and Glasgow in partnership with the Universities of Birmingham, Chester, Newcastle, Winchester and Queen Mary, London, and Grimsby Institute for Further and Higher Education.

Following the success of our popular workshops as part of the first part of the project, we are delighted to launch a new series of regional workshops to facilitate shared learning and joint sector solutions around employee engagement and wellbeing.

Our first series of workshops were attended by 250 representatives of over 100 Higher Education Institutions and were over-subscribed ? act fast to reserve your place!

In each region we are holding two topic-based workshops each featuring 2-3 case study presentations, questions and discussion groups based on the challenges you are facing.
