Heated – At the University of Stirling

HEaTED members mentoring scheme.

We are pleased to send you details of the HEaTED members mentoring scheme. The scheme aims to give access to the skills and expertise held within the HE technical community on a national level through individual mentoring.

Any technical, specialist or managerial staff from HEaTED member institutes can request to take part as a mentee or mentor (mentors must attend the course below or show evidence of attending a similar course). The HEaTED team will then endeavour to match up individuals through the scheme. Mentors will have a specific role to facilitate guidance and offer advice to members (particularly new or young) both at a specialist level and on a wider spectrum such as personal and career development

It is envisaged that the scheme will have the ability where possible to use ‘tele-mentoring’ using webcam technology.

ADVANCED LEADING YOUR TECHNICAL TEAM (ALYTT)

Manchester Airport Marriott Hotel

Dates: Wednesday 30 September – Friday 2 October 2009

The Leadership Foundation first introduced AYLTT in 2006 and since then it has proved extremely popular. Following large demand from technical managers, we are about to run a sixth course in Manchester.

Advanced Leading Your Technical Team has been designed within the overlapping contexts of higher education and that of the technical management role in a modern university, as well as providing a real challenge to participants by exploring difficult issues which will impact on their leadership, looking for pragmatic ways to tackle these and using up to date leadership research. The whole programme is designed for impact – participants will progress personal leadership change as a result of attending the workshop.

I therefore write to seek your assistance and request that should you know of anyone who might benefit from this programme then please forward them this email or contact Wendy Mason, programme administrator.

For more details on the programme and details of how to apply please see the attached booking form or visit the Leadership Foundation website:

Please return the completed form at your earliest convenience, before the closing date of

Dear Colleagues
There are a number of courses, listed on the Institute of  Science and Technology website that are scheduled to take place in June and July that are of potential interest to technicians in Higher Education in the following categories: Biological, Chemistry, Electronics, Management, Quality Control/Assurance and Safety. Please pass details of these courses to any technical staff who may be interested in attending. Many of these courses only have a few spaces left so please book early to avoid disappointment.

An Introduction to Project Management 29th Sept

An Introduction to Project Management Workshop to be held at Manchester Airport Marriott Hotel on 29th September 2009

This workshop will be helpful for anyone involved with work that could benefit from a project management approach, where the “toolbox” could make a positive difference. It is relevant to all categories of staff at any grade, though you should be involved in specific pieces of work that could be “managed” as a project.

Please see the attached flyer or see here for further information

2009 HEaTED UK Wide Survey of Technical Staff Training Needs

Dear Colleague

HEaTED (Higher Education and Technicians Education and Development) is a project that has been developing over that last 2-3 years in order to provide HE with the technical skills needed for the future, details.

HEaTED has received further funding in order to run a second UK wide survey of technical staff training needs, and subsequent development action plan, in order to build on the successful work that is already producing real results.

This is to give you advance notice of the forthcoming HEaTED survey and to seek your help as partners in making the 2009 HEaTED survey a success! The survey aims to find out how the work environment has changed since 2006 (1st UK survey), highlighting the technical skills needed by HE employers today.

A hard copy flyer and accompanying letter from Sheffield VC Professor Keith Burnett, chair of the HEaTED management group is being sent out this week to all VCs, Principles, Registrars, Heads of HR, Heads of Staff Development and HEaTED membership named contacts. The letter is inviting ALL HEIs to participate in the survey which will be launched for Technical Specialists on 1st May.

Colleagues that have a responsibility for the training and development of Technical Staff will find this of particular interest.

Details and copy of flyer on the Institute of Science and Technology (IST) website.

Executive Director and a Skills Development Manager Posts

Following the successful bid to HEFCE for further funding, work commenced in August 2008 on the second phase of this important project, which will culminate in the establishment of an enterprise that will oversee the professional development of technical/specialist staffing in HE. This new organisation will have the responsibility for raising the profile of the above group of staff, as well as working towards establishing the profession as a recognised and valued community of practice within the UK higher education sector. Critical to delivering the projects aims and objectives will be the recruitment of a number of key staff and to that end please find below brief details for the first two of these positions, for which applications are requested.

Applications and a full CV should be forwarded, preferably electronically, to Bob Hardwick (see below for address), or marked for the attention of Bob Hardwick and sent to:
Mr Bob Hardwick
Kingfisher House,
90 Rockingham Street,
Sheffield, S 1 4EB, by Friday 06 March 2009.

For further information or to discuss either of the above posts, please email Bob Hardwick or Matt Levi with your contact details.
